Overnight stays in hotels rose by 8.2% in Januar
Spanish hotels recorded 14 million overnight stays last January, which is 8.2% more than in the same month of 2015, according to figures released Tuesday by the National Statistics Institute (INE).With the annual rebound in January, hotel stays accelerate their growth by 1.2 percentage points compared to December 2015, when the annual rate was 7%.The annual progress made in January is due to the 8.9% increase in overnight stays of residents in Spain and to a lesser extent, the 7.8% increase in overnight stays by non-residents. Still, the average stay fell 1.8% in the first month of the year to stand at 3.1 nights per traveler.The first month of the year recorded hotel occupancy of 43.5% of the available places, 7.3% more than in 2015. The degree of occupancy by places at weekends up 8.6% and stood at 49.2%.Andalusia and Madrid, favorite destinations of nationalAs for destinations, Andalucía, with 18.5% of the total, the Community of Madrid (15%), Catalonia (13.8%) and Valencia (13.3%) were preferred by Spanish residents during the month of January. By contrast, fewer overnight stays were La Rioja (0.8%) and Ceuta and Melilla (0.2%).

In the two-star hotels Gold (+ 4%), four gold stars (+ 3.7%), three two Silver Stars (3%), a gold star (+ 2.8%), a silver star (+ 2.6%), three stars of gold (+ 2.1%) and five gold stars (+ 1.6%).Extremadura recorded the highest increase with 6.2%, followed by Catalonia and Andalusia, up 4.3% each over the same month of 2015, followed by the Principality of Asturias which rose 4.2%, La Comunidad de Madrid (+ 4%) and Galicia (+ 3.1%). In January, communities registered their biggest drop in hotel prices were Ceuta (-10.1%) and the Balearic Islands (-2.1%).
